City Garden Hotel Makati Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Manila’s business district, but City Garden Hotel Makati actually surprised me in the best way. When you first walk up to this four-star spot on Makati Avenue, it doesn’t scream luxury from the outside – honestly, it blends right into the neighborhood. But that’s kind of the point, and once you’re inside, you realize they’ve put their money in all the right places.

The thing about staying in Poblacion is that you’re right in the thick of things without being stuck in the sterile Ayala CBD bubble. I mean, you can literally walk to some of the city’s best hole-in-the-wall restaurants and bars – there’s this incredible sisig place about two blocks away that I stumbled onto purely by accident. The hotel sits right at the corner of Durban Street, which sounds fancy but it’s really just this quiet side street that somehow manages to stay relatively peaceful despite being so central. You’ll hear the occasional jeepney rumble by in the morning, but it’s not the honking chaos you’d expect from Makati. Actually, I slept better here than at some of the big-name hotels closer to the financial district.

What really won me over was how the staff seemed to know their neighborhood inside and out. When I asked about getting to Greenbelt without dealing with traffic, the front desk guy didn’t just point me toward a taxi – he walked me outside and showed me the exact route through the back streets that would get me there in ten minutes on foot. The rooms themselves are solid without being flashy; everything works (which, let’s be honest, isn’t always a given), the air conditioning actually keeps up with Manila’s humidity, and the beds are firm enough that you won’t wake up feeling like you slept in a hammock. The WiFi was fast enough for video calls, though I did notice it got a bit spotty during evening hours when everyone’s probably streaming. One small thing that bugged me – the shower pressure could be stronger, but the hot water was consistent and plentiful. You know what though? For the price point and location, these are pretty minor complaints. I’d definitely come back here, especially if I needed to be in this part of the city for work but still wanted to experience the real Manila vibe after hours.
