Edsa Shangri-La, Manila Overview
You know what struck me first about Edsa Shangri-La, Manila? The moment you walk into that lobby, there’s this immediate sense of calm that washes over you – which is honestly pretty remarkable considering you’re right in the middle of Ortigas Center’s business district chaos. I mean, step outside and you’re dealing with the usual Manila traffic symphony, but inside this five-star property, it’s like someone hit the mute button on the city.
The location is actually brilliant if you think about it. Being on Garden Way means you’re tucked away from the main EDSA thoroughfare (thank goodness for that), but you can still walk to pretty much everything in Ortigas – the Podium, Robinsons Galleria, all those office towers if you’re here on business. I’ve stayed here a few times over the years, and what keeps me coming back is honestly the staff. They remember things about you, which sounds small but makes such a difference when you’re jet-lagged and just want someone to help you figure out the best way to get to Makati without spending two hours in traffic. The concierge team actually knows their stuff – they’ll tell you to take the MRT during rush hour instead of a cab, or suggest hitting up the night markets in the area.
The rooms are spacious by Manila standards, and I really appreciate that they’ve managed to keep things feeling fresh despite the hotel being around for a while now. The beds are properly comfortable (not just hotel-marketing comfortable), and the bathrooms have that deep soaking tub situation that actually fits a normal-sized person. What I love is that most rooms have this view situation going on – either toward the Manila skyline or the pool area, both of which are pretty spectacular at sunset. The pool deck, by the way, is where you want to be in the late afternoon. It gets this golden light filtering through the city buildings that’s perfect for unwinding after dealing with Manila’s intensity all day. The water’s always the right temperature, and there are enough loungers that you don’t have to do that awkward towel-claiming thing at dawn. Food-wise, their buffet breakfast is extensive without being overwhelming, and they do a solid job with both international options and Filipino classics – the longsilog is actually legit, which not all hotel restaurants manage to pull off.
