Hotel Benilde Maison De La Salle Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Hotel Benilde Maison De La Salle tucked into the Angelo King Building right where Arellano Ave meets Estrada Street, I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, it’s technically a hotel inside an academic building, which sounds sort of weird on paper. But you know what? Sometimes the most unexpected places surprise you, and this four-star spot absolutely did.

The thing about this place is that it sits in this really interesting part of Manila where you’ve got the De La Salle University energy mixed with the grittier, more authentic side of the city. Walking up to check in, you can actually hear students chatting in the corridors during the day, which gives it this oddly comforting buzz – like you’re staying somewhere that’s actually alive and part of the community, not just another sterile hotel tower. The lobby has this clean, modern academic vibe that honestly grew on me pretty quickly. It’s not trying to be flashy or over-the-top luxurious, just thoughtfully designed and comfortable.

What really won me over was how the staff seemed to genuinely know their stuff about the neighborhood. The front desk guy – I think his name was Miguel – actually drew me a little map showing which jeepney routes to take to avoid the worst traffic, and pointed out this tiny lugawan place around the corner that serves the best congee I had during my entire trip. You don’t get that kind of local insight at the big chain hotels in Makati, trust me. The rooms themselves are surprisingly spacious for Manila standards, with these big windows that let in tons of natural light during the day. Fair warning though – if you’re a super light sleeper, the street-facing rooms can get a bit noisy in the early morning when the jeepneys start their routes, but honestly, after a day or two it just becomes part of the city soundtrack.

I stayed here for five nights and never felt like I was missing out on anything by not being in the touristy areas. Actually, being here made exploring places like Malate and Intramuros way easier than I expected – you’re close enough to walk to some really interesting spots, but far enough from the chaos that you can actually decompress at night. The building’s elevator situation can be a little slow during peak university hours, which is probably my only real complaint, but the trade-off is that you’re staying somewhere with genuine character instead of another cookie-cutter business hotel. Plus, there’s something kind of cool about having breakfast while university life is happening around you – it reminded me why I love traveling to places where real people actually live and work, not just tourist bubbles.

The staff are quite helpful and respectful.

What could be improved: I was so disappointed with the breakfast menu. It was not as I expected as it was my 2nd time. There were such limited choices, and staying for a week there could have been different options (lazy menu) , but it was the same thing every single day. It was not worth the money I paid for.
